  • The Life of The Strandeds

It was an adventure for the record books,
no one caring about the lights or looks,
only holding in mind the heart of things,
hoping for water (maybe half a cup),
and seeing what the morning brings.

Most often the sun came up.
Most often the tide brought up
a new and useful find. A shell,
    driftwood, an animal carcass,
or the ringer from an old ship's bell.

So they let the evenings pass
boiling saltwater to make the soup last
and fashioning bones into fishing hooks.
One day a ship hailed and they all sang,
and not long after the Saviors came.
Yes, it was an adventure for the record books

  • An Arab Shepherd Is Searching For His Goat On Mount Zion

An Arab shepherd is searching for his goat on Mount Zion
and on the opposite hill I am searching for my little boy.
An Arab shepherd and a Jewish father
    both in their temporary failure.
    Our two voices met above
the Sultan's Pool in the valley between us.
Neither of us wants the boy or the goat
to get caught in the wheels
    of the Had Gadya machine.

Afterward we found them among the bushes,
and our voices came back inside us
    laughing and crying.

Searching for a goat or a child has always been
the beginning of a new religion in these mountains.
